A Cinematic Approach to Couple Photos

The Plan:

When I first started planning out this shoot with Veronica we talked about capturing it like a story. That meant taking photos starting in the parking lot, the walk to the beach, arriving at the beach, in the water, and walking back to the car at the end of the night. We planned outfits that felt like them and that were comfortable to wear- I cannot emphasize enough about how important it is to feel confident in your clothes. During the shoot I shot on a variety of backdrops: greens, sand, ocean waves, and sky. That way i had a ton of textures and color tones to play around with. I pretended like I was filming a movie and thought about scenes that would lead up to the beach, character build, reach a climax and then wind down.

The Colors:

At the beginning of the session we were in the parking lot. When I was editing this portion of photos I focused on rich warm greens to communicate livelihood, playfulness, youth and energy. I felt like this introduced who Veronica and Christian were.

As we headed to the beach I focused on emphasizing blues. I wanted the scenes to feel slower and peaceful. This was a moment between big moments and I wanted it to feel like the quiet before the main part of the story takes place.

Toward the end of the shoot, my colors got warmer. I emphasized magentas and warm tones again to represent passion, energy, love, and romance. When the sun was setting and they were playing in the water, this was my climax of the story. These are my favorite scenes in a movie, the scene is set, the characters are introduced and the tension has been building until this point.

After these photos, I used less magenta. I made the images more gold to communicate coming down off the passion of the reds. Leading back to another quiet moment as they head back to the parking lot. I ended with a shot of them heading back to the parking lot to communicate the end of the story.

Did you feel like you were watching a movie or experiencing different emotions while you looked above?

Words from the Clients:

"Sydney made our entire shoot such a fun and memorable experience! She has an incredible ability to guide and direct in a way that feels effortless and flows naturally, while also bringing creative ideas that truly reflected us as a couple.

The whole time, it felt like we were the main characters in our own movie!!! When we saw the final photos, they looked like stills from the dreamiest film!! To top it all off, she even sent us home with Polaroids from the shoot, a thoughtful detail that made the experience even more special."
